I need help with a new r4 card?

Okay so. A few weeks ago i bought this r4 card http://www.amazon.com/NintendoDS-nintendo-ds-dsi-dsl-dsxl/dp/B004HR4O9A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1316876931&sr=8-1 (to see it, go to the second picture, the one in the red box.) It’s the r4i3ds, and i was able to set it up and get it running perfectly. So i decided to buy one for my friend. However, i accidentally bought it from a different seller. So i got the one in the white box (first picture.) It says r4 sdhc 3ds dsi dual core smart update. It took me a while and i got everything set up on it, but after downloading the appropriate software form the website, everything runs fine.
Everything, that is, except for actual DS games.
When i first got the card, a “Loading…” screen came up and nothing else would load. after i installed the right software, it went away and started working. but now that same screen comes up whenever i try to play a DS game. On my r4i3ds, all i had to do was put the games in the appropriate folder. This doesnt seem to be the case here, because no matter what i do, i cant figure it out.
do the roms need to be patched?
If so, what patch and patching software should i use?
